ASC-132: Using MGA to Shorten the Beef Breeding Season
نویسنده
چکیده
Issued in furtherance of Cooperative Extension work, Acts of May 8 and June 30, 1914, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, C. Oran Little, Director of Cooperative Extension Service, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Lexington, and Kentucky State University, Frankfort. Issued 12-91—10M The MGA double-injection prostaglandin system offers cattlemen the opportunity to maximize estrous response and fertility during the synchronized periods. This system also provides producers the chance to inseminate more females during the first two weeks of the breeding season. The additional number of cows or heifers that can be inseminated with a second injection of prostaglandin benefits producers when they attempt to take full advantage of AI and inseminate as many females as possible over a relatively short period.

Effect of prebreeding body weight or progestin exposure before breeding on beef heifer performance through the second breeding season.
Two experiments evaluated prebreeding target BW or progestin exposure for heifers developed lighter than traditional recommendations. Experiment 1 evaluated the effects of the system on heifer performance through subsequent calving and rebreeding over 3 yr. Heifers (229 kg) were assigned randomly to be developed to 55% of mature BW (299 kg) before a 45-d breeding season (intensive, INT; n = 119...
متن کاملEffects of melengestrol acetate and P.G. 600 on fertility in Rambouillet ewes outside the natural breeding season.
The effects of melengestrol acetate (MGA) and P.G. 600 on ewe fertility outside the natural breeding season were evaluated. Rambouillet ewes were assigned to one of four groups: (1) control (C; n=92); (2) PG600 (n=86); (3) MGA (n=99); and (4) MGA+PG600 (n=92). A pellet with or without MGA (0.3mg/ewe/d) was fed at 0.15kg/ewe/d for 7d. On the last day of pellet feeding, ewes were given either sal...
متن کاملREVIEW OF ESTROUS SYNCHRONIZATION SYSTEMS : GnRH
Synchronization of estrus contributes to optimizing the use of time, labor, and financial resources by shortening the calving season, in addition to increasing the uniformity of the calf crop. The major limitation of estrus-synchronization programs is their inability to induce a potentially fertile estrus and ovulation in noncycling cattle (i.e., prepubertal heifers and anestrous suckling cattl...
متن کاملInvestigating optimal bull:heifer ratios required for estrus-synchronized heifers.
The objectives of this study were to determine 1) the effect of bull:heifer ratio on reproductive performance and associated costs and return on heifers in synchronized estrus and 2) the effect of estrus synchronization on reproductive performance and economic variables, in a multiple-sire, pasture breeding situation. Eight hundred yearling beef heifers and 28 mature, sexually experienced beef ...

Effects of Body Condition Recent University of Arkansas research determined the interactive effects of forage environment and body condition on the calving rate of beef cows. multiparous beef cows (1/4 to 3/8 Brahman) were managed to achieve marginal (4.7) or good (6.6) body condition scores (BCS) over approximately 5 months before the initiation of the breeding season. growth, endophyte acres ...
